Mu’in Fouad Shalhoub, director of bakeries in Sweida Governorate in southern Syria, said that bakeries in the governorate have been suffering from a severe shortage of flour for some time, leading to their closure for several days.
Shalhoub explained that the crisis is caused by a decline in the supply of flour and fuel and the irregularity of shipments from international agencies and organizations, adding that the available quantities “only cover about half of the daily bread production needs.”
He added that a number of bakeries have stopped operating for more than three consecutive days due to a shortage of basic materials, causing a sharp decline in bread production, which is the main staple food for the population.
Shalhoub indicated that the Mesopotamia Association sent a relief shipment of 50 tons of flour to the governorate on October 6, which was distributed to bakeries to ensure the continuity of bread production. The association stated that the shipment was sent in coordination with the Syrian Arab Red Crescent, under the supervision of the Directorate of Social Affairs and Labor in Hasakah and the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor, as part of its efforts to mitigate the effects of the shortage of basic commodities across Syria.
